Description
The Remote Mount Header Tank is used to replace molded OEM expansion tanks on vehicles swapped with engines that originally had them.
A header tank is a term given to a container that holds a “head” of water for the cooling system. A majority of today’s modern vehicles have a plastic version of this, but they are more commonly referred to as expansion tanks. Regardless of the name, these tanks essentially provide the same critical functions: a convenient place to fill the cooling system and a space for the cooling system to expand.
If you have an engine swap from a vehicle that originally had an expansion tank as part of the cooling system, you will notice that it was the highest point in the system. The header tank needs to be situated as high as possible in the engine bay so that the water level in the tank is higher than the radiator. Typically mounted to a firewall, bulkhead, or shock tower with lines plumbed from all the individual cooling system components (radiator, upper water neck, turbo (if equipped)) that could potentially trap air and then fed back to the water pump’s inlet.
The water pump draws on the header tank, pulling air and water from each of the components it is connected to, and trapping the air at the highest point. Air is then displaced as the system expands or when manually topped off.
NOTE: You have total control over this project! What is shown is just an example… You can specify the diameter, height, inlet positions, as well as overflow port clocking. Mounting bracket is NOT INCLUDED. The cap bung has a 1/16″ NPT port for connection to an overflow and uses early model Honda radiator caps, such as an 88′-91′ Civic/ CRX or 90′-93′ Integra.
